Kitchen Table.

"Everything but the kitchen sink." - what a cliché.

My favorite thing about that quote is that it perfectly describes my friend Kathryn's first apartment, right out of grad school. She had a teeny studio apartment in West Hollywood, and it had a full fridge, stove, oven, etc...but no kitchen sink. The idea of washing dishes in the bathroom seemed too icky so she ate out a lot and moved quickly.

I am lucky enough to have a studio (with a gorgeous view!) that feels a lot more like a 1 bedroom. I have a full kitchen...but sadly, it is ill equipt for my cooking adventures. I can get very creative in ways to use the space when I get the impulse to bake or cook...but the one thing I am truly missing from my lovely little space: a kitchen table. Somehow, eating my culinary masterpieces on the coffee table sitting on the sofa feels all sorts of wrong. So I mostly stick to basic dishes and dream about the day that I'll have my KitchenAid mixer, my Le Creuset pots and pans, and a big table full of people to eat the yummy food I dream up.

Until then, I have to rely on my favorite food blogs to get me through the day. Fall is an especially outstanding time to be in the kitchen...cooler weather, and all sorts of fall goodies to be had: pumpkin, apple, spices.

Some of my favorite cooking blogs:

Fresh 365

Joy the Baker

The Bitten Word

The Kitchn

Crumbly Cookie

Yum Sugar

Food Gawker

And I am actively recruiting @mcpuggle to start up a food blog. She is amazing!

LA County Fair.

What a weekend...full of crazy fair food, carnival games and rides, and The Beach Boys! I adore county fairs, and as the largest county fair in the United States, the LA County Fair has a special place in my heart...I've been going since I was a kid. My two favorite things about the fair:

1) Gross fair food
2) The End of Summer concert series

Word on the street is that the new deep fried specialty is deep fried butter, but thank goodness this is only offered in Texas. Honestly, the idea kind of makes me sick, though my coworker thinks it sounds exceptional. I guess the health differences between deep fried butter and deep fried anything else are probably marginal. Still...yikes!

I allowed myself one deep fried item this year, and it was: deep fried snickers. And it was...decadent. And tastier than I thought it would be! I doubt I'll ever have one again, though.

My other favorite item: chocolate covered banana, with sprinkles. When my boyfriend said - "Look, Bluth bananas!" I had to get one. Oh dear.

Sunday brought The Beach Boys concert with my mom, which was a special treat for both of us. The Beach Boys was my first concert ever when I was 8 years old, at Quakes stadium in Rancho Cucamonga. With Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) as a special guest. And I was a BIG Uncle Jesse fan. While he wasn't in attendance yesterday, the concert was still amazing! These guys are timeless and outstanding. They remind me of a pop-ier version of one of my current favorites, Rebelution. There's just something about that laid-back beachy vibe that makes me smile. Reminds me of Santa Barbara, I suppose.

How amazing are those guys?

This weekend marks the first in ages that I will be in town. I think some junk food at the LA County Fair and perhaps a movie night are in order. What else would be good for a heatwave in September? Happy Friday!

Fall Television.

With the beginning of fall comes the overwhelming new fall lineup of television. Several of these new shows won't make it past their initial runs, and with so many new shows this fall, I can't imagine it would be much different this year. But here are a few things I plan on watching as much as I can - tricky without a DVR, but thankfully most of these shows stream online if I miss any episodes.

The Good Wife
CBS, Tues 10pm
I just watched the pilot of this show on Tuesday, and I'm hooked. A new TV drama with good acting and a great cast!

ABC, Thurs 8pm
This show hasn't even started yet, but it's being reviewed as the next (less ridiculous) Lost. I'm not a Lost fan but this show looks promising!

NBC, Thurs 9:30pm
Comedy? Check. Joel McHale? That's all I really needed to hear. This show started last week but I have yet to watch the pilot. Hulu here I come!

Return favorites:

Ghost Hunters
Syfy, Wed 9pm
I love this show. Love! I don't know why. I guess the fact that it's one of the few reality TV shows that doesn't totally exploit might help. Except maybe it's exploiting ghosts...but I can handle that.

Law and Order: SVU
NBC, Wed 9pm
I seem to be more into the reruns of this show than the new episodes, but I hope to catch a few new ones this season!

The Real Housewives of Orange County
Bravo, Thurs 10pm
Returns November 5. My trashiest TV show, by far. Truly, this stuff is awful, and I love it.

The Hills
MTV, Tues 10pm
How could I leave out the show I love to hate? I'm sure I'll have quite the opinion on this next week. Kristin's back!

I watched an episode of the new 90210 last night and was pretty bored. I loved the premiere of Glee but haven't felt inclined to watch again, for some reason. Any other good fall shows worth watching?

If we even got the season here in LA, fall would be my absolute favorite. We only get two seasons here really...sunny (usually hot) and cloudy (with rain if we're lucky). Yesterday was the first "official" day of fall...marked by 100 degree weather around these parts. No matter...it's probably about time to bake some yummy pumpkin goodies to celebrate!

I adore shoes...but I refuse to pay a month's rent on a pair. I love Louboutins as much as the next girl...but I just can't justify them. When did it become OK for a pair of shoes to be $1000? But while I was up in Northern California this past weekend, I missed an online sale for some midheel slingback Loubs...on sale for under $200! In black of all colors. Basically I could have worn them to work every day. Sigh. Life is full of tragedies (ha).

But I'm comforted by the fact that I bought these adorable Steven's. Love them. Perfect for this hot LA early fall and right into the late fall/winter season. They're totally flashy on their own, but with a simple outfit and a gold pendant necklace, they are just perfect.

Some days, and especially Mondays after long fun weekends, I need a reminder in willpower and patience. Love this!

weekend update.

The completely unplanned addition to my life. My poor 5 year old Toshiba laptop puttered it's final moments long enough for my brother, the tech-wiz, to salvage all my music (I back up everything else on a flash drive and a flickr account after several total devastating document and photo losses). So I made the switch. I'm a MAC now. MacBook Pro, specifically. I'd say it's true love.

Happy holiday weekend!

Saratoga Springs

As much as I love lazy summer days (or as lazy as they can get between work and trips!) I have a special place in my heart for September. Growing up (and even through college) I loved the first day of school...brand new school supplies and a new year to take on. August still seems like the end of the year to me instead of December. Who knows if that feeling will ever subside, or if I even want it to. I went to Starbucks yesterday and saw their chalkboard sign declaring the return of the Pumpkin Spice latté. It's official...happy fall!

Back in California.

I was off in Saratoga Springs, New York for 5 days (well 4 plus a red-eye flight) so I have been away from my computer. I have some great photos and stories but need to get settled back in. But check out the pic (above) that I took from the plane before we landed! Los Angeles, with the mountains on fire behind. You can't see from this picture, but we could see the flames from the PLANE. I can't imagine how high they must have been.
