attack of the summertimes.

(Waiting in line for a summertime concert at the fairgrounds...summer 2005!)

It's almost July. We just passed summer solstice, aka the longest day of the year, which means the days are actually getting SHORTER now. I know it's not noticeable but I feel it already.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get over the idea that summertime is supposed to be about lazy days, and impending change (September...which still feels like a beginning, even though I haven’t been in school for – wow – 4 years now). Now it’s more about work work wedding work wedding work weekend trip work.

Summertime was my favorite time living in Isla Vista...the long lazy days that didn’t feel the pressure of finals and classes and epic parties and obligation. Summertime meant BBQs, and wine nights, and beach days, and beer pong, and laying in the pool on a pool float for hours, and trying to figure out just how to successfully make a vodka watermelon.

Its days like today I miss those things the most! *sniff sniff* I’ll close the door on my pity party now, as I have tried my best to plan a long lazy weekend this weekend to bring back some of the magic.

Happy Weekend!

Sometimes, things online just make me happy.

Saw Toy Story 3 this weekend...it was incredible! Pixar did not disappoint. No spoilers, just go see it immediately if not sooner, if you haven't already done so!

There was also a big birthday celebration for a friend that prompted Mary and I to make this:

(Chocolate layer cake with chocolate ganache and marshmallow frosting, toasted)

An amazing afternoon that involved baking, sitting around chatting on the patio, and my first trip to Surfas. I was immediately in love and I'm going to have to devote a whole afternoon to wandering around this amazing spot. For the time being, we bought a cake box and lunch.

(Lemonade and a grilled cheese - White Cheddar, Fontina And Blue Cheese Mayo On Pecan Raisin Bread - YUM)

(Potato, Charlie, Zoe)

The birthday party was Saturday evening at The Penthouse at The Huntley Hotel, and it was pretty fantastic. There were lots of martinis involved. A great sort of Saturday night, indeed.

Sunday was of course Dad's Day, and I got to go home and cook up some yummy lunch for the fam!

(Steaks, farmer's market potatoes, salad, bread, lemonade)

And now it's Monday. Le sigh...

happy dad's day.

My dad is fantastic. Truth. Happy Father's Day, Dad.

salted caramel ice cream.

I don't really have to elaborate on that title, right? I mean...salted.caramel.ice.cream. I die.

Sweet Rose Creamery opened up recently and I had been dying to try it out. Sunday afternoon seemed like the appropriate opportunity.

With a rotating menu of flavors based on local availability (small batch=intense yums), I didn't know what to expect. I tasted the peach buttermilk (tart and unique) and the banana. But I already knew...salted caramel would most definitely be part of my order, and I hadn't even tasted it. I got a scoop of banana and a scoop of salted caramel.

Absolute heaven, with sea salt sprinkled on top for added measure. Luckily I'm training for a half marathon, so I can add Sweet Rose to my occasional menu!

weekend, celebrate!

Celebrations were all up in my weekend plans. A rehearsal dinner and a wedding on the beach in Malibu, then a bridal shower brunch! Love spending some quality time with people I love.

(Can't get enough of the beach)

(Love love love!)

(Just perfect)

(Horrible photo, but I made these! Red velvet with cream cheese frosting - YUM)

weekend, rum.

Last week was busy, busy, busy with work. But Saturday night I was able to partake in a bachelorette party for a dear friend, Julie. We went to La Descarga - which seems to be getting so much glowing press lately! And let me tell you...it's all truth. This place is all sorts of awesome. I don't even like rum very much, but I was addicted to the Bad Spaniard and the mojito. Yum!

I also saw Get Him to the Greek this weekend during an impromptu Sunday Funday. Pretty good film! I am kind of a big Russell Brand fan.

holiday weekend.

I am back from a glorious 4 day vacation, and it was everything I hoped and more.

(Champagne during brunch)

(I am now a Balvenie connoisseur)

(Perfect day for shopping)

(Driving into San Francisco)

(A plaque at The Tipsy Pig, which a friend tried to barter off the restaurant)

(Highway 1 coastal bliss)

(Steps from our hotel room in Cambria)

Not pictured: Greek food, lots of wine, excessive shopping, group birthday dinner, near-empty San Francisco bars, the charm of Cambria (my new favorite place!), wine tasting, and Freebirds nachos in Santa Barbara.

My parents got me this darling cake:

I came home to end my weekend perfectly: watching The Bachelorette with Mary and snuggling with my cat.

Oh, and Mary made me this. Without a doubt, my best birthday cake to date. I could eat this merengue with a spoon...it is that good. Yum!
